Silly Pop Music

Saturday, March 25th, 2006

I’ll be the first to admit that my taste in music is a bit odd. I’m no hipster, but I do have both Elliot Smith and ‘N Sync on my playlist. I have American Edit, followed by Rainie Yang’s new album. I have strange things like Hirai Ken’s “Pop Star” video in absurdly high quality.

Yes, pop music is stupid sometimes. I used to bop happily along with “Backstreet’s Back”; I know “Beep”–and indeed, just about all the Pussycat Dolls singles–is about as silly as it can get. But then I read about the new single that knocked Madonna’s “Hung Up” off the UK charts.

It’s Chico Time. And it’s mindblowingly, well, retarded. If it were just the cheerleaders, maybe I could understand (Cyndi Wang’s “Ai Ni” video, anyone?) but honestly, I stared in disbelief. This unseated Madonna?!
