At least this time it took me less than a month

Wednesday, November 7th, 2007

Testing out my new Amazon Associates program participation with The Year of Endless Sorrows: A Novel which was very postmodern and took some getting used to, and ultimately I felt like I was reading a combination of William S. Burroughs, RENT the musical, Joan Didion if she were obscene, and a sad ending. The author broke his main character.

Something that made me smile today: The security guard at Ross learning Spanish from one of the customers. “Buenos tardes. Good afternoon. Buenos noches….”

And yes, good old fashioned writing is in order.

veekee’s new status message: still kind of squicked about donating blood :(danbalsam: “squicked“??? me: squicked

2:16 PM http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=squick

danbalsam: ok

me: on a more etymological level

it’s a portmanteau of “squeamish” and “ick”

2:17 PM danbalsam: “portmanteau”? what a vocab lesson i’m getting today

me: a word you get when you combine two words

2:18 PM http://www.answers.com/topic/portmanteau-new-word?cat=technology

the example that site gives, by the way, is a reference to Lewis Carroll’s Jabberwocky

which is full of portmanteau words

if it makes you feel better, in my other gchat window i’ve used the word “boobtastic”

2:19 PM danbalsam: nice!

On Holding Doors

Thursday, September 20th, 2007

For the first time that I can remember, a complete stranger coming from a different direction sped up his gait in order to open and hold the door for me.

I’m not particularly dressed up, except perhaps for the fact that I have earrings in today.  I’ve got (THICK) glasses on.  I’m wearing jeans that are close to wearing out.  He wasn’t even really my type–neither athletic nor geeky.  Spiked hair, actually, and I saw the glint of an earring.  But he smiled back when I thanked him.

I appreciated the effort.  But I’m still confused.

Creative Costuming

You know, I’ve seen law students pick up some bad habits over the years, but this I think is a new high.

One Sentence Entry, No. 1*

Tuesday, September 19th, 2006

My father has come and gone and left a small collection of (mostly full) bottled water in his wake.

* I’ve been collecting single sentence summaries of notable–well, impressions, for lack of a better word–for some time now. This one is from today, and I decided it would be a good way to launch the series. We’ve seen my father once before, in “Aged People”.

Drunken Master’s Halo

Tuesday, September 12th, 2006
Drunken Master’s Halo, originally uploaded by sleepychameleon.

This is old, and a repost of another photo. I’ve been testing out Preloadr to see if it does what I want to do. It’s not a bad widget, but I was looking for something that would let me reduce my file size so I can upload more than 10 photos a month. Otherwise, posting the Comic-con photos alone would take half the year.

I like the cropped version. It has more of the feel I’m going for (and yes, I did notice the letterbox/screen still-shape). This would be fun as a desktop wallpaper. I should make one for Raymond, the Drunken Master in the photo.

Also considering upgrading to flickr pro. I like it too much!

“Aged People”

Friday, April 28th, 2006

In response to a link I emailed him about tips for estate planning, my father responded,

The content is indeed important for aged people, and would be convenience for those they left behind. Am I getting there? Probably is, Uh?

Yes, Daddy.
