Post-mortem?

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

I can’t possibly be the only one who does this, but every time some big project comes to an end, I’ll be in a bit of a funk for a while. This year’s was a bit of a double-whammy, with finals followed by the film shoot, so I didn’t really have time to recover from my long run of 5 finals. Production wrapped and I was packing to move back down to Southern California day later. Tomorrow I have to pack and plan for a family vacation to Seattle (our flight leaves at 6pm). The day after I get back from Seattle, I start at my summer firm job.

Hectic, yes. Exhausting, yes. But in some ways, I’m glad it’s preventing me from spending too much time brooding over mistakes made and lost opportunities to be great. I am a perfectionist; just not a very good one.

Summer Projects include getting the Hastings Client Counseling Team website up and running; more comics work; running and weight loss; organizing my room. There’s work to be done still on Spectre. I wanted to put together an art of/making of book, as well. At some point, Temi and I will have another photo shoot, and I’ll have finish the small stack of books I’ve started in the living room as this summer’s “To Read” pile. And I promised Ando an NPC profile for his Shadowrun campaign that is now several weeks overdue (eep!)…and I wanted to start training at the NWTC. Crap. I need to pull myself together.

For starters: sleep.

Heard Lately:

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

Overheard in the dining commons: “This whole sex business is not getting any reading done.”

Professor Tax, wrapping up lecture a couple minutes late while the next class gets noticeably noisier in the hall: “These kiddies want to come in and talk about International Shoe.”

911 from a cell phone?

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

I was hoping that my next entry would be more substantive, but this weekend’s work was devoted to working on a paper for my seminar on Asian Pacific Americans and the Law.

This link (via Angry Asian Man) made me stop and go OMGWTF: Angry Suspect Stalked Victim After Fight with Girlfriend. Aside from the general things wrong with the whole incident (of which there are legion and I trust others to comment on more eloquently than I can)….

What is wrong with Palo Alto’s emergency response system that neither the girl nor her rescuer could get through 911 until they were on a land line?

Alternatively: cell phone service providers–is there something that can be done on their end?

Signs that Law School Ate My Brain

Thursday, October 11th, 2007

On hearing Talib Kweli’s song “Ms. Hill”, I thought initially that he was talking about Anita Hill.

(I did figure it out once he started making references to the Fugees….)

veekee’s new status message: still kind of squicked about donating blood :(danbalsam: “squicked“??? me: squicked

2:16 PM http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=squick

danbalsam: ok

me: on a more etymological level

it’s a portmanteau of “squeamish” and “ick”

2:17 PM danbalsam: “portmanteau”? what a vocab lesson i’m getting today

me: a word you get when you combine two words

2:18 PM http://www.answers.com/topic/portmanteau-new-word?cat=technology

the example that site gives, by the way, is a reference to Lewis Carroll’s Jabberwocky

which is full of portmanteau words

if it makes you feel better, in my other gchat window i’ve used the word “boobtastic”

2:19 PM danbalsam: nice!

On Holding Doors

Thursday, September 20th, 2007

For the first time that I can remember, a complete stranger coming from a different direction sped up his gait in order to open and hold the door for me.

I’m not particularly dressed up, except perhaps for the fact that I have earrings in today.  I’ve got (THICK) glasses on.  I’m wearing jeans that are close to wearing out.  He wasn’t even really my type–neither athletic nor geeky.  Spiked hair, actually, and I saw the glint of an earring.  But he smiled back when I thanked him.

I appreciated the effort.  But I’m still confused.

Morning dilemma

Wednesday, September 12th, 2007

Woke up this morning not wanting to get out of bed…result of a botched Morgan Lewis interview from yesterday. (And when I say botched, I mean really, really botched; details not forthcoming.)

But I had Con Law reading due, for which I’d specifically set the alarm to 5:30 am so that I could finish it.

One of my goals for this school year, besides getting into a regular workout schedule and consistently waking up early, was to eat healthy breakfasts before going to school. No more granola bars or Starburst grabbed on my way out. No more getting ravenous before 11:30.

But I really, really didn’t want out of bed.

In the end I compromised. I went and got yogurt so I could eat in bed.

However, the Con Law reading is still not done. Sigh.

Creative Costuming

Wednesday, November 1st, 2006

You know, I’ve seen law students pick up some bad habits over the years, but this I think is a new high.
